Position Summary

Insulet's Global Manufacturing Operations organization is building its first US Manufacturing location in Acton, MA, and is looking for a Plant Engineering Manager to provide the leadership and technical expertise in the organizational design, operational startup and departmental leadership of the plant's engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the team responsible for the design, development and implementation of the systems, processes and resources that will create a world class culture and manufacturing operation.

 

The Plant Engineering Manager is a key part of the plant's leadership team, reporting to the Sr. Director of US Plant Operations, and is responsible for the design and implementation of the resources, processes and systems of the plant's engineering department for the next 12 months, as well as the ongoing plant engineering, operations & maintenance support, and project management of a highly automated manufacturing facility.

The OmniPod is a revolutionary and easy-to-use tubeless insulin pump that features just two parts and a fully-automated cannula insertion. Insulet's Delivery Systems business also partners with global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to tailor the OmniPod technology platform for the delivery of subcutaneous drugs across multiple therapeutic areas. Insulet's construction of the Acton manufacturing facility is part of a broader project that includes the construction of a new Corporate Headquarters in order to relocate the organization's corporate offices from Billerica, Massachusetts.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the effort to hire and train the engineers and technicians in the department, including developing the tools required to support.
  • Develop the processes and procedures required to manage the engineering and maintenance functions for the plant.
  • Lead the selection, implementation and validation of the plant's computerized maintenance management system.

 

  • Supports General Plant Safety, Good Manufacturing Practices and Regulatory Compliance with an understanding that these are absolutes and are Priority #1. Ensuring that General Safety and Patient Safety are absolute priorities by setting an example to others.
  • Maintain a cGMP compliant environment and operate within FDA guidelines for Class III Medical Device manufacturing.
  • Train and evaluate the efficiency and productivity of team members by establishing performance standards, objectives and coaching.
  • Establish key KPI’s and score-carding / tracking mechanisms to ensure a strong culture of continuous improvement.
  • Build capability of others to strengthen individuals and team and assure successful execution of department's responsibilities. This can include, but is not limited to, technical expertise, improving existing business process systems, developing training aides, and/or providing feedback to other functions.
  • Ensuring compliance with Company Policies and Procedures, SOP's, and internal and external audits, as immediate supervisor of team members.
  • Ability to prioritize, direct and delegate to ensure all manufacturing lines and equipment are operating at the highest efficiency by fostering a continuous improvement environment and leading the effort to identify and resolve inefficiencies, as well as ensuring preventive and predictive measures are in place. This requires the application of strong leadership skills to provide technical direction to other engineers and technicians, while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Plan, organize and direct the engineering and maintenance operations which ensure the most effective return on assets
  • Manage processes to minimize manufacturing costs through effective utilization of labor, equipment, facilities, materials, and capital.
  • Maintain and improve safety to ensure OSHA compliance standards are met
  • General understanding of Lean concepts. Leads sustainability process and continuous improvement utilizing problem solving methodology.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or experience in related field preferred. A combination of education, training and experience that results in demonstrated competency to perform the work may be substituted.

 

  • 7+ years of management experience in a high volume manufacturing environment, with at least 3+ years of departmental leadership.       Prior plant / manufacturing line start up experience is a plus.
  • Experience in a regulated industry required, life sciences preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety related issues including compliance with State, Federal and Local regulations as well as knowledge of manufacturing operations/quality control assurance best practices.
  • The ability to analyze data using various operating systems and programs, and to develop intra-department teams to establish goals and take corrective actions to improve performance.
  • The ability to work closely in a team based environment with all levels of employees. Experience and capability working collaboratively under a Quality Management System (QMS), as part of a cross-functional team is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, Independent self-starter with highly developed analytical/ problem solving skills. Experience with continuous improvement methods such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, CTQ is a plus.
  • Strong budgeting and financial management business acumen
  • Track record of leading positive change.
